To get into the school that I currently attend, SDSCPA, we have to audition to get into the high school and what I initially got in for was instrumental music but as an elective, I chose photography. During that time, I was unaware of the journey that I was about to embark on. I never connected with music as much as I do with photography because it gave me a means of escape and expression when I was stressed especially since school was starting to get more difficult. I was always looking for an art form to vent my emotions through and I had realized that practicing flute was not doing that for me; In photography, I was in control of what people saw in my pictures, impacting them in a more direct way unlike music. I am always considerate of what my peers think of my photos so I can receive constructive criticism. Being able to apply this feedback has helped me not only to improve and refine my art but increased my ability to understand criticism in daily life. Although some artists create pieces that are for aesthetic appeal, I personally make sure that viewers can connect with my pictures because it can create an unintentional bond between said person and that piece of artwork. Connections are extremely important to me as an photographer and as an individual because people in this day and age tend to be distant therefore, refusing to open up and make connections. For my five themed pictures, I chose to portray connections between two lovers. When I was starting this series, my idea was originally very specific but mainly focused on the disconnections but it eventually became more of a broader concept of positive and intimate connections. There is a sense of vulnerability when you’re in a relationship because you are offering that person your whole self including your insecurities, your secrets, and your past which is actually really refreshing to let go and confide in someone you can depend on. In this series, I wanted to visually show what that feeling is and that’s why my models are unclothed; skin touching skin is the most purest and physical way to connect with somebody because if there’s no tangible boundary between two people it’s the closest you can get to the other person’s heart and soul. The reason why the first picture is the only picture where the models have clothes is because it’s the beginning of this slow process where the partial trust blossoms into vulnerability. The other pictures I captured, there’s always some form of touching each other to represent the physical sensation. The sensory, touch, is a powerful feeling because it turns mental connections into stimulation through both the body and mind. I chose monochromatic colors to contrast and separate the models from the white background, which represents clear thoughts in the lovers’ minds. In every photo, the only image playing in their heads is the image of themselves because in that moment nothing is more important. |
